Many membracid treehoppers are attended by honeydew-harvesting ants. Ant mutualism often favors group living, which will in turn influence social interactios and communication. I investigated aspects of life history that underlie the social behavior of an aggregating, ant-attended treehopper. The number of adults, and their patterns of distribution, changes dramatically over the course of a season. Despite the relatively low vagility and high persistence in the same clump of host plants, individuals encounter a wide range of social environments. This aggregating species differs from solitary species in the clumped distribution of females, and possibly in the intensity of acoustic competition among males, but both aggregating and solitary species exhibit large temporal changes in density. A high degree of temporal and spatial variation in the social environment is probably characteristic of many insects and may be an important source of selection on insect communication. 相似文献

Summary
Bacillus brevis 47 was cultivated in 2-1 fermentors to study the effect of medium supplementation on extracellular protein production. Additional polypeptone, when supplied initially or at 12 h (late exponential phase), had little stimulatory effect on extracellular protein levels, which reached 6–7 g/l after 48h. A large increase in protein production was observed, however, when polypeptone was added at 21 h (stationary phase). This addition resulted in the accumulation in the medium of 14 g/l protein after 48 h, and a total of 16 g/l when cell-bound protein was included. The effects of TGF1 on cell cycle events in a rat liver derived epithelial cell line (BL9) and in two in vitro transformants of this line were studied by flow cytometry. Using either ethidium bromide staining or the incorporation of bromodeoxyuridine to evaluate DNA synthesis it was shown that TGF1 prevented the entry of G0/G1 phase BL9 cells into S phase. TGF1 did not exert its inhibitory effect(s) on DNA synthesis by the modulation of early events in the cell cycle. The tumorigenic transformed BL9 cell lines gave contrasting responses to the effects of TGF1. DNA synthesis in a BL9 cell line derived by transfection with an active N-ras oncogene was unaffected by TFG1 and thus appeared refractory to its growth controlling effects. On the other hand cells from a BL9 cell line derived by in vitro transformation with activated aflatoxin B1 retained their sensitivity to the effects of TGF1. Thus the loss of the inhibitory effect of TGF1 on DNA synthesis is not obligatory for the malignant transformation of rat liver epithelial cells.Abbreviations TGF1

Summary The nitrate assimilatory pathway in Neurospora crassa is composed of two enzymes, nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase. Both are 2type homodimers. Enzymebound prosthetic groups mediate the electron transfer reactions which reduce inorganic nitrate to an organically utilizable form, ammonium. One, a molybdenum-containing cofactor, is required by nitrate reductase for both enzyme activity and holoenzyme assembly. Three modes of regulation are imposed on the expression of nitrate assimilation, namely: nitrogen metabolite repression, nitrate induction and autogenous regulation by nitrate reductase. In this study, nitrocellulose blots of sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) resolved proteins from crude extracts of the wild type and specific nitrate-nonutilizing (nit) mutants were examined for material cross-reactive with antibodies against nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase. The polyclonal antibody preparations used were rendered monospecific by reverse affinity chromatography. Growth conditions which alter the regulatory response of the organism were selected such that new insight could be made into the complex nature of the regulation imposed on this pathway. The results indicate that although nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase are coordinately expressed under specific nutritional conditions, the enzymes are differentially responsive to the regulatory signals. 相似文献
